On November 22, 2024, Governor Hochul signed into law Chapter 476 of the Laws of 2024, regarding the supervision of intravenous administration of contrast media by a radiographer. As a result, effective immediately, NPs and PAs are now permitted to supervise radiologic technologists administering contrast media. Historically, this was limited to physicians, despite otherwise being well within the scope of practice of NPs. This amended version of the Public Health Law, which was supported by the NPA, is consistent with recommendations made by the American College of Radiology’s (“ACR”) committees on Accreditation Computed Tomography (“CT”) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (“MRI”) in 2022, that formally acknowledged the role NPs should play in supervising contrast media administration. ACR guidance clearly stated that NPs and PAs, as well as non-radiologist physicians, should be permitted to provide direct supervision of contrast media administration. Additionally, Medicare now allows for supervision by advanced practice providers, including NPs, of contrast media administration, as long as it is consistent with state law. With the change adopted in late November, New York State law is consistent with Medicare policy and allows the NPs to provide this supervision. The NPA is proud to advocate of behalf of Nurse Practitioners in New York State.
