Gregory Rys, DNP, FNP-BC
President
Dr. Rys received his associates in nursing and RN in 1996 from Maria College. He has the distinction of being the first male nurse to work in labor and delivery at St. Peter's Hospital, Albany, NY where he worked from 1996-1999 as well as at Albany Medical Center in PICU/NICU. Greg received his bachelors and masters of nursing at the Sage colleges and received his NP in family practice in 2001. Greg has nearly 20 years of clinical experience in rural upstate New York Dr. Rys received his DNP from Walden University in 2016. Greg also precepts NP students from several different universities around the state. After receiving his DNP is was made the Clinical Coordinator of NP students at Bassett Healthcare Network, with the role of organizing clinical preceptors and placing all NP students throughout Bassett's multi-site primary care network.
Greg is active in The NPA at both the Region and state levels. He has current memberships with the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) and National Nurse Practitioner Residency and Fellowships Training Consortium (NNPRFC).
Henry Moscicki, DNP, FNP-C
President Elect
Henry E. Moscicki is a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner from Batavia, New York. He has a BSN from SUNY Brockport, MSN from the University of Rochester, and DNP from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions in Utah. He is the owner and operator of Genesee Health Care, a Family NP practice since 1999. Moscicki is also Medical Director of LeRoy Manor Adult Home in LeRoy, New York, and is a medical provider at the Genesee County Jail in Batavia, New York. Moscicki is also an Assistant Professor of Nursing at St. John Fisher College. He is the President of Delta Sigma Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau and Past President of the Region II NPA. Aside from being Past President, Moscicki is also the parliamentarian for Region II. Moscicki is also past Regional Director of Region II with the AANP on a national level. He has served on many community boards including one term on the local City Council, and Board of Directors for the St. Johns Home in Rochester. Moscicki is married and has two boys. He is an ice hockey coach, and avid golfer. He serves the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo as a Permanent Deacon.
William Bodeker, FNP
Immediate Past President
Bill began his nursing career in 2000 at the University of Rochester –Strong Memorial Hospital as a clinical staff nurse. During his time there he worked on a medical/surgical, unit, the Cardiothoracic ICU and the Emergency Department. During this time he also worked part time as a Flight Nurse/Paramedic for Mercy Flight Central, a helicopter service that provides EMS response and inter-facility transports for upstate New York.
After completing his Family Nurse Practitioner program at the University of Rochester he served as a Stroke Program Coordinator and later as coordinator of the Epilepsy Program at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. In 2014, Bill was recruited to the NYU Langone Medical Center as the Nurse Practitioner Manger for Neurology, Neurosurgery and Epilepsy where he had oversight for the inpatient NPs and PAs and worked clinically in Neurosurgery. He was involved in numerous committees of the Medical Board and was chosen to be one of the first Master Trainers for the High Reliability Organization initiative – an ambitious enterprise wide program to change culture in order to eliminate preventable harm.
In 2018 he was recruited to Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan where he served as Senior Director of Advanced Practice Nursing with oversight of their over 500 Advanced Practice Nurses. During his tenue he instituted a mentorship program for new NPs, developed and ran awards and recognition initiatives for advanced practice nurses and helped increase the professional billing activity of the APNs. Additionally he served as co-chair of the Allied Health Professions Subcommittee of the 8 hospital Mount Sinai Health System.
In 2021 he was recruited to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip NY where he serves as the Director of Advanced Practice Professionals for the hospitals 100+ employed NPs and PAs. Bill has a passion for quality and patient safety and in 2021 he completed the Clinical Quality Fellowship Program sponsored by the United Hospital Fund and the Greater New York Hospital Association.
Jeanne Martin, DNP, ANP-BC

Jeanne has been a member of The NPA since 1996 when she joined as a student. She has been an active member of her Regional Board since 1998 serving in several capacities including committee chairs, President, Secretary and most recently as Treasurer with her term ending in December 2019. She has also been an active member of The NPA’s Board of Directors since 2005 serving as Alternate Regional Director (Region 7), Regional Director (Region 7) and as President (2013). She has served as The NPA’s Membership Chair since 2014.
Jeanne works at Stony Brook University Hospital in the Department of Urology as an inpatient nurse practitioner and has held this position since 1997. She graduated from Stony Brook University’s Masters of Science Adult Health Nursing program in 1996. She completed her Doctor of Nursing Practice in Primary, Acute and Critical Care Nursing from Stony Brook University in 2016. She also is an Adjunct Clinical Instructor for Stony Brook’s Masters in Adult/Gerontology Nursing.
Laura Markwick, DNP, FNP-C
Treasurer
Laura received her BSN from the University of Vermont in 1985 and her MSN and DNP from St John Fisher College in 2006 and 2010 respectively. Dr. Markwick's background in nursing includes a wide variety of specialties, including ICU, Med/Surg, Administrative, Utilization Review, Community Health, and Long-Term Care. As a Family Nurse Practitioner, she has worked as an Assistant Professor of Nursing and FNP Track Coordinator at St John Fisher College. In that role Laura also served as the Director of a nurse practitioner academic practice site that provided medical/mental healthcare for uninsured individuals. She helped to expand an inner-city telemedicine program for pediatrics to include patients of all ages. Laura is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor at University of Buffalo, teaching at the undergraduate/graduate/doctoral level. In April 2015, she opened my own private family practice in Rochester, NY. Laura is an active member of The NPA of NY, AANP, and the Genesee Valley Nurses Association. She is also a charter member of the ANA-NY and member of ANA. Laura serves as President of the Monroe County Board of Health and is the only nurse practitioner on the Excellus Credentialing Committee.
In 2017, Laura was selected as a Fellow with the AANP. In 2016, she was selected as the Nurse Practitioner of the Year by the Nurse Practitioner Association New York State (The NPA) as well as a Woman to Watch by her patients. Academically she received the Distinguished Graduate Student Award from St John Fisher College.
Dr. Markwick has presented at the local, state, national, and international levels on several different topics and has published 4 different manuscripts in various journals, including the Journal for The NPA (JNPA) and JNP.
Jeff Mendola, CFRE

Jeffrey Mendola graduated from SUNY at Buffalo in 1991 with a BS in Business Administration and in 1992 with a BA in Political Science. After 16 years of sales and marketing responsibilities in the medical and industrial fields, he transitioned to the non-profit world in 2008 as the Director of Development for Mercy Flight Western New York and led their fundraising efforts.
In 2011, he was invited to speak at the Association of Fundraising Professionals International Conference in Chicago about how to utilize for-profit sales and marketing tactics in the non-profit environment. In 2012, Jeffrey became the Director of Mission Advancement for New Directions Youth and Family Services.
In February of 2013, FundRaising Success magazine recognized Jeff as one of their Rising Stars of Fundraising – one of only 5 recognized nationally.
In 2017, Jeff earned his Certified FundRaising Executive credential and is currently one of less than 8,000 CFRE’s in the world. That same year, he joined the American Venous Forum – an international professional society of vascular surgeons focusing on vein disease as their Director of Mission Advancement.
He has served on multiple local Boards including AFP Western New York, the Graycliff Conservancy and the Cheektowaga Economic Development Corporation. He currently serves on the board of Lord of Life Adult & Child Services and continues to mentor fundraisers new to the profession.
A WNY native, he returned to the area in 1987 and lives in Cheektowaga with his wife, three daughters currently enrolled in New York universities and black lab, Sadie. When not working, he enjoys tackling home improvement projects and cooking for family and friends.
Ellen Battista, DNS, RN, NP
Region 1 Director
Dr. Ellen Machamer Battista received her BSN from Syracuse University, her MSN, Nurse Practitioner, and DNS from the State University of New York. Dr. Battista is both a pediatric nurse practitioner and an adult nurse practitioner. She has over 25 years of pain treatment experience in a wide variety of pain problems that include acute and chronic pain, post herpetic neuralgia, cancer pain, and pediatric pain. Dr. Battista is currently the sole proprietor of Pain Treatment Consultants of Western New York. This is a private practice that provides pain treatment to individuals with chronic pain problems. In addition to presenting at regional and national conferences, she has published in such journals as Oncology Nursing Forum, the American Journal of Critical Care and the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management.
Dr. Battista has held various board positions in Region 1 and has chaired the Region 1 annual conference.

Sharon Jasek, FNP-BC
Region 3 Director
Sharon is credentialed as a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner who works as a provider for military medicine. She earned a BS and MSN from Syracuse University and graduated from the Family Nurse Practitioner program at Upstate Medical Center and completed the Medical Business Administrator Certification Program at the Mary Rose College of Nursing in Maine. Her career in nursing began at the Syracuse Veteran’s Hospital where she worked in Critical care, then Community Health/Occupational health and finally primary care. Sharon has been working for the past 13 years in Military healthcare. She is a primary care volunteer provider at Mary Rose
Clinic in Oneida, NY.
Professional Affiliations/Organizations: Sharon has been an active member of the NPA and served as the Region 3 President 2021 to Dec 2023, past president in 2024 and Syracuse Rep 2017-2022 and 2024. She has also a been a member and past president of the Critical Care Nurses Association, Syracuse Chapter.
Current volunteer work: Medical Reserve Corps (2015 to the present) Mary Rose Clinic for the un or underinsured (2016-present) as medical provider and NYS Surrogate Decision Making Committee as medical provider (2010-present).

Karin Hall, DNS, ACNP, FNP-C
Region 4 Director
Karin Hall is a Doctorate prepared Nurse Practitioner specializing in acute and chronic disease management both in the hospital setting and outpatient arena.
Karin received her Bachelor’s Degree in Biology at SUNY Albany, followed by her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Utica College of Syracuse University.
She received a Master’s Degree in Nursing from SUNY IT where she completed her Adult Health Nurse Practitioner. She then went on to complete her Post Masters Certifications in both Family Health and Acute Care Nurse Practitioner studies at Sage Graduate School. In 2018 she completed her Doctor of Nursing Science studies at Sage Graduate School. Her research at Sage focused on Nurse Practitioner Attitude, Knowledge and Prescribing Practices Regarding Opioid use For Chronic Pain in NYS.
Karin’s career as a Nurse Practitioner encompasses Emergency Care, Hospitalist and Acute Care, Palliative Care, Bariatric Medicine, Acute Physical Rehabilitation Care, and Family Health Care, Telehealth, as well as Health and Wellness Coaching. She has served as Adjunct Faculty at Utica University for the Nurse Practitioner Master’s Program. She is committed to continued learning and supporting her community, while promoting healthy habits and personal development across the lifespan. She is passionate about her profession and is excited to continue expanding her skills and reach to offer a broad- based service to the organization and community at large.
She currently lives in Saratoga, and spends her free time reading, learning to cook, playing with her dog and enjoying time with special friends and family.
Mary Ellen Ryan, FNP-BC
Region 5 Director
Mary Ellen Ryan began her career in nursing as a LPN at age 18. She went on to pursue an Associates degree at a local community college, then a Bachelors Degree and finally a Master of Science as a Family Nurse Practitioner at Pace University in 2010. She is certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Her practice has been in Primary Care Services both in an office setting and with individuals with severe intellectual disabilities in long-term care settings. She has worked with the latter population as a nurse for a good part of her career.
Mary Ellen joined the NPA as a student. Within a year of graduation, she became the Secretary for the Lower Hudson Valley zone. Since regionalization, she has been a member of the Board of Directors for Region 5, holding positions including President-elect, President, Immediate Past President and Group Representative. She even covered a vacancy as Treasurer of the Region for a brief period of time. She has spent a great deal of time recruiting and mentoring new Board members, and sits on committees within the Region including Finance and By-Laws, which she has chaired since it’s inception.
Alanna Kavanuagh, EdD(c), MS, BS, FNP-BC, CCRN

Alanna Kavanaugh, a Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner, stands at the intersection of exceptional patient care, education, and leadership. With a Master's degree from the University of Mount Saint Vincent and an ongoing pursuit of a Doctorate of Nursing Education at Columbia University, Teachers College, Alanna embodies a commitment to academic and clinical excellence.
As the Assistant Dean of Graduate Nursing and Chair of the Family Nurse Practitioner Program at her alma mater, the University of Mount Saint Vincent. Alanna has spearheaded transformative changes. Under her guidance, curriculum restructuring has yielded outstanding results, notably elevating board certification scores from 44% to an impressive 97% for first-time test-takers. Her innovative initiatives include a transition-to-practice boot camp, targeted remediation programs, 1:1 faculty-student coaching, and peer mentorship programs, and facilitating seamless practice transitions for students.
Alanna's influence extends beyond academia. With over 17 years of clinical experience, she has significantly contributed to the Pulmonary Division at Weill Cornell Medical College where she served as the sole Nurse Practitioner in the department. Her initiatives in oxygen therapy, patient education, and support group work have positively impacted patient care. Actively engaged with the American Lung Association and COPD Advisory Board, Alanna continues to shape the landscape of pulmonary care.
Her dedication to advancing nursing knowledge is evident in an extensive list of presentations, podcasts, and publications. Notably, her research on "Preferences for Asthma Decision-Making" has been accepted by the European Respiratory Society. Recognized as a trailblazer in healthcare, Alanna has secured notable grants, including a $50,000 Stonywold Grants and a $1,500 Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation grant. Her impactful work is featured in magazines and online platforms, including the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation's Breathe Bulletin and Weill Cornell Medicine.
Alanna currently serves on the Board of Association of Pulmonary Advanced Practice Providers, she serves as the current President of her local Sigma Theta Tau chapter, Eta Sigma. She served as the former Secretary on the Region 6 Board of the Nurse Practitioner Association of New York from 2022-2024. Alanna Kavanaugh's multifaceted contributions underscore her dedication to elevating healthcare, education, and professional organizations alike. Her journey exemplifies excellence and innovation in the dynamic field of nursing.
Diane Santangelo, DNP, RN, ANP-C
Region 7 Director
Diane Santangelo is a full time Clinical Assistant Professor at Adelphi University. She coordinates the Adult Health II course and teaches at the undergraduate level. She has worked as an adjunct faculty member for the undergraduate and graduate level programs at Stony Brook University. Prior to her work at Adelphi, Diane worked as a Registered Nurse seventeen years and as an in-patient, Acute Pain Management Nurse Practitioner for sixteen years at Stony Brook University Hospital. She has traveled locally, statewide and from coast to coast presenting and educating a variety of health care professionals on topics related to Pain Management. She has four publications and has served for four years on the board of the American Society for Pain Management Nursing (ASPMN) LI Chapter. Diane received the Sigma Theta Tau International Kappa Gamma Chapter Award for Excellence in Clinical Nursing Practice in 2007 and the Nurse Exemplar Award from the ASPMN National in 2011.
Diane joined The NPA in 2002 and became the Membership Chair of Region 7 in 2011. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (1985), Masters of Science in Adult Health Nursing (2002), and Doctor of Nursing Practice (2002) degrees from Stony Brook University.
