Elaine Gelman, CPNP passed away on June 4, 2002. Elaine was born in Brooklyn, NY and graduated from Queens College. She became a registered nurse in 1948 after attending the New York University-Bellevue Hospital School of Nursing. She became a pediatric nurse practitioner in 1975 after attending the Columbia University-Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing. Elaine was a courageous, articulate pioneer who along with a core group of less than fifteen enterprising NPs began a journey in 1981 to legalize the NP profession in NY. She was instrumental in obtaining statutory authority for New York NPs in 1988 during her second presidency of the New York State Coalition of Nurse Practitioners. She was the first executive director of the NYS Coalition of Nurse Practitioners from 1996 to 1998. Elaine was a member of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, where a scholarship was established in her honor. Elaine was a lecturer to many nursing groups, a mentor to many students and practicing NPs and a frequent contributor to nursing journals. She was a member of Nurse Practitioners of New York, the American College of Nurse Practitioners and the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, and was on the New York State Board of Nursing from 1990 to 1996.
